Status as of 2026-10-25: ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date "several months prior to its launch."
Yes, once ETIAS launches. The United States is on the official list of visa-exempt countries whose nationals need an ETIAS for short stays (Official: Who should apply). Until then, US citizens travel visa-free as before (with EES biometric registration at the border).
What it means for Americans
- Cost: EUR 20; free under 18 and over 70 (Official: What you need to apply).
- Validity: up to 3 years or until your passport expires; a new passport means a new ETIAS (Official: What is ETIAS).
- Stay: up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the 30 countries (Official: What is ETIAS). Cyprus is counted separately.
- Passport: issued within the last 10 years and valid at least 3 months beyond departure (Official: What you need to apply).
- Timing: most decisions within minutes; it can take up to 4 days, or longer (up to 14 or 30 more days) if more information or an interview is requested (Official: What is ETIAS). Apply before booking non-refundable travel once it is open.
- Not a visa and does not guarantee entry; border guards still check you.
Dual US/EU citizens: travel on your EU passport and you do not need ETIAS.
