ETIAS refused? Reasons, appeals and what to do next

By Aaron Houston · Last checked 2026-10-26 against official EU sources

Status as of 2026-10-26: ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date "several months prior to its launch."

Nobody has been refused yet, because ETIAS hasn't started. This page explains the rules the EU has published for when it does, using only official EU sources.

Why can an ETIAS application be refused?

According to the official ETIAS FAQ, an application will be refused if the applicant:

It will also be refused if there are "reasonable doubts about the reliability and veracity of the data, statements or documents provided."

Simple mistakes matter too. The FAQ warns that errors such as typing "0" instead of "O" in your passport number can lead to refusal, revocation or annulment, and that you'll be refused boarding if the numbers don't match.

How will I know why I was refused?

You'll get an email with the reasons, the authority that decided, and how to appeal (official: Your right to appeal). If you don't see it, check your junk folder (FAQ).

How long before I get a decision?

Step Official timing
Most applications Within minutes
Otherwise Reply within 96 hours: granted, refused, or a request for more information
Extra information requested You have 10 days to provide it; a decision follows within 96 hours of submitting it
Interview At the consulate nearest you or online; decision within 48 hours after the interview
Overall Up to 30 days in some cases

Source: official ETIAS FAQ. Not replying or missing the interview is itself a refusal ground.

How do I appeal an ETIAS refusal?

Sources: Your right to appeal, FAQ.

Unconfirmed: appeal deadlines, any appeal fees and whether you need a lawyer. These depend on each country's national law, and the EU hasn't published a country-by-country list. Follow the deadline in your refusal email.

Can I apply again after a refusal?

Yes. The FAQ says "a previous refusal will not lead to the automatic refusal of a new application." If the refusal came from a mistake, correct it and reapply. The EUR 20 fee is non-refundable, so a new application means paying again (unless you're fee-exempt).

What's the difference between revoked and annulled?

Meaning (official FAQ)
Revoked Evidence shows you no longer meet the conditions under which it was issued
Annulled Evidence shows you did not meet the conditions when you applied

Either way you get an email with reasons and appeal details. If it happens while you're in Europe, you no longer meet the conditions for legal stay. Depending on the reason (for example a lost passport replaced with a new one), you may be able to apply again (FAQ).

I was refused but must travel urgently. What can I do?

You can request an ETIAS with limited validity if you need to travel for humanitarian reasons or important obligations and you expect to be refused, or already were (official page).

Does a valid ETIAS guarantee entry?

No. Border guards make the final decision and can still refuse entry if you don't meet the entry conditions (FAQ).
