ETIAS in 2027 for U.S. Travelers: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

By Aaron Houston · Last checked 2026-10-26 against official EU sources

Status as of 2026-10-26: ETIAS is not in operation and the EU has not announced a start date. It says it will announce the date "several months prior to its launch" (official ETIAS site).

Short answer: U.S. citizens will need ETIAS once it launches, but whether that happens in 2027 is not confirmed. Even after launch, there is a transitional period of at least 6 months in which travellers without ETIAS who meet the other entry conditions are not refused entry (Official: ETIAS timeline explained).
