New passport? Why you will need a new ETIAS

By Aaron Houston · Last checked 2026-10-28 against official EU sources

Status as of 2026-10-28: ETIAS is not in operation and no applications are being collected. The EU says it will announce the start date "several months prior to its launch."

Short answer: an ETIAS is linked to the passport you applied with. Once ETIAS starts, if you get a new passport for any reason (renewal, name change, damage, loss or theft) you need a new ETIAS, and you pay the EUR 20 fee again unless you are exempt.

Does a renewed passport carry over my ETIAS?

No. The FAQ says: "An ETIAS travel authorisation is linked to the travel document. You need to apply for a new ETIAS travel authorisation if you changed your travel document for any reason" (official FAQ). Airlines and border guards check the authorisation against your passport number, and the EU warns that if the numbers don't match "you will be refused boarding and entry at the border."

How does passport expiry affect how long my ETIAS lasts?

An ETIAS is valid for 3 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. The EU's own example: if your passport is valid for two more years when you apply, your ETIAS is also valid for only two years (official FAQ). So if your passport has less than 3 years left and you travel to Europe often, it can make sense to renew the passport first and apply for ETIAS with the new one.

Which passports can I apply with?

To apply, your passport should be valid for more than three months after you plan to leave the ETIAS countries and not be older than 10 years (official: What you need to apply). You can technically apply with a passport that has under three months left, but the EU warns you "will be refused entry at the border" unless you have very good reasons such as humanitarian grounds (FAQ). Family members of EU citizens with family-member status are not bound by the three-month rule.

Situation New ETIAS needed?
Passport renewed (normal expiry) Yes
New passport after a name, surname, gender or nationality change Yes
Passport lost or stolen (at home or in Europe) Yes, after you get a replacement document
You turn 18 during the ETIAS validity No, it stays valid until it expires
Small typo in your application Request a correction (up to 30 days) or reapply
Wrong passport number, nationality or email Reapply (the EU's recommended fix)

Can I renew ETIAS before it expires?

Yes. You'll get an email before your ETIAS expires, and you can apply for a new one 120 days before the current one ends (official FAQ). There's no special renewal form; it's a new application with the same EUR 20 fee for travellers aged 18 to 70.

I lost my passport while in Europe. What now?

The FAQ sets out the steps: report the loss or theft to the local police, and your ETIAS "will be cancelled." Contact your country's consulate for a new passport, emergency travel document or laissez-passer. Once you have it, request a new ETIAS with the new document's details (official FAQ). For US citizens, the replacement document comes from a US embassy or consulate, not from the EU.

I changed my name. Do I need a new ETIAS?

Only once you get a passport in the new name. "If you changed your travel document to reflect the change in your name, surname, gender or nationality, you will need to apply for a new ETIAS travel authorisation" (FAQ). Travelling on your old passport with its matching ETIAS stays valid until either expires.

What if I made a mistake on the passport number?

The EU says the "fastest and most convenient way" to fix a mistake is to apply for a new ETIAS, and that you should always reapply for substantial changes such as a wrong passport number, nationality, email address or name. A minor typo can instead be corrected on request, but that "may take up to 30 days" (FAQ). The most common error the EU flags is typing "0" (zero) instead of the letter "O" in the passport number.

Unconfirmed: Whether the EUR 20 fee is charged again when you reapply only to fix your own data error. The FAQ says the fee is non-refundable but doesn't address reapplications for corrections, so assume you pay again.

Before-you-renew checklist

  1. Check your passport: issued under 10 years ago and valid 3+ months after your planned exit date. Better: 3+ years left so your ETIAS lasts its full term.
  2. Renew the passport before applying for ETIAS if it's close to expiry.
  3. After launch, apply only on the official site or app (travel-europe.europa.eu). See official site vs third-party sites.
  4. Copy the passport number carefully. Check 0 versus O.
  5. Travel with the same passport you used to apply.
